I think a good foundation in art is definitely necessary to become a decent digital painter. Also a tablet is pretty vital, I remember struggling with a mouse a while ago haha. What's really amazing is that some of these are hard to differentiate from a real image Digital painting #2 and #4 are my favourites in this collection. I'm sure that would help to use those kinds of references rather than just starting from scratch. Other than that, the closest design to a digital painting I've actually completed was the 'Pop Star' piece that I did as a tutorial a while back. It was pretty time consuming, but well worth the efforts!
