PSDFAN – Twitter Background Design Contest!

PSDFAN on Twitter

For those of you who didn’t know (it’s not really advertised on the site) PSDFAN is in fact on Twitter, along with the rest of the world. You can find me tweeting about the website, along with various design articles and inspirations I find interesting here:

PSDFAN Twitter Page

I’m actually going to be redesigning PSDFAN reasonably soon, so I’m holding out until then to promote things like Twitter a little more.

The Contest

I was struck by this idea yesterday, and thought that it would be a really fun way for community members to get involved with the site and practice their design skills. This is a nice change from the previous comment contests, and is really just a bit of fun.

As you can see from the image above the current PSDFAN Twitter background leaves a lot to be desired. It was something that I threw together very quickly to replace the default Twitter background, but I’ve never really been happy with it. I was planning to redesign the background myself, but then thought that it would be great to allow my visitors to contribute to the Twitter page.

Therefore, I’m opening the floor to your own designs! I’m planning on using ALL designs that I feel are up to a level of quality you would expect from the main site, and will be rotating through user submitted background every few days. This should help keep the Twitter page fresh, and showcase some of the great community talent.

Here are some rules and guidlines:

> Please post all links to background images below
> Ensure that background images are .jpg format
> Entries are more likely to be used if they are professional, and creative. Go wild with this!
> Try to bear in mind the conventions of Twitter backgrounds (i.e.: images cutting off, fading to color etc)
> You may use the PSDFAN logo, any images from our tutorials, but NOT other people’s images (i.e.: images from the inspiration posts, as PSDFAN does not own these images).
> If your design is considered good enough then it will be used as the PSDFAN Twitter background, and seen by thousands of designers worldwide.
> By submitting your design you give me the full rights to display your design as my Twitter background at any time that I want.
> There is no end date to this contest, you can submit your entry at any time and it will be considered for my Twitter page. I’d love to have 20+ backgrounds rotating in the future.
> Feel free to credit yourself somewhere on the design (you can put ‘created by…’ for instance)
> It’s not required, but would be useful to put a little info about the site in your background. Alternatively I’ll welcome more abstract concepts.

Our Logo

Here is a larger image of our logo to use in your designs. If you click on the image you’ll be able to download a .psd of the image, with text isolated from it’s background.

And there you have it! I really hope many of you will participate in this contest, and I look forward to seeing your great works!

    • Tom says:

Hi Kriffin. Thanks for commenting. The guidelines aren’t all the strict. Just create a Twitter background for PSDFAN, and if I like it then I’ll use it. The only real rule is not to use images that are copyrighted to somebody else. Let me know if you have any other problems.

Snowtruly: I’d prefer for people just to post a link to their image in the comments to this post so that I can easily keep track of all entries. You can upload your image somewhere like ImageShack and just post the link here.

RUGRLN: I don’t think there actually are any set dimensions, as I think it depends on the resolution of the screen you’re using. I’ve heard 2048 px by 1707 px mentioned by some people, but I assume this is taking into account massive monitors. Personally I would try a smaller background that fades to color or something like that, and then it doesn’t matter how big it is.

Salmen: Thanks for the translation! That’s really helpful :)

Everyone: I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with. I’m actually thinking about adding my own tagline at the top of each background (created by: username) just to make it clear that they are community designs. What do you think?

  7. Tom says:

Oh also, if you leave your Twitter username with your entry I’ll Tweet about your account+entry when it goes live.

  8. Do you have a vector of your logo, or a hi-res .png?

  9. Tom says:

Good suggestion Rommel. You can now download our logo if you see the edited post above :)

  10. Kriffin says:

Ho thank you very much guys !

I work in company as webdesigner, so i think that i’m able to do something for the PSDFAN’s Twitter !

PS : I love your creations :) More nice than strange !

    Have fun all !

  11. Kriffin says:

Sorry for the double post, the PS it was for Salmen… :X

  12. peekr says:

What a great idea! I love the PSDfan site, it’s awesome…

  13. RUGRLN says:

Hey…sorry if I haven’t noticed it yet, but where do I submit? hehe :p

  14. Tom says:

You just post a link to your image in this comments to your post. I look forward to seeing your design!

  15. loswl says:

Just a suggestion, entries could be placed in the PSDFAN flickr pool http://www.flickr.com/groups/psdfan/ with the tag “psdfantwittercontest” this way entries can be shown by linking from Flickr and it would be easy for you or others to find the entries in the group pool by searching for the tag name.

    • Tom says:

Yeah, that’s a good idea. It might be a good idea to link to the entry in the Flickr group in the comments here also. I don’t want to miss anything!

    • Tom says:

Thanks for the entry! I really like it, it’s simple but stylish. Is there any chance that you could link to the full sized version, as I can’t get it from your Flickr. I’ll definitely be using it on my Twitter page though :)

  16. Tweetpic is going through some changes today, I checked the link and it is working now :o )

  17. RUGRLN says:

    ‘Ere we go:

Simplistic yet professional….let’s hope it’s gd!

    • Tom says:

CreativeDonline: Your design is now live on my Twitter!

RUGRLN: Another awesome entry. I’ve got your design lined up for my Twitter account. Remember, I’ll be rotating through all entries periodically. Do you have a Twitter account and I’ll credit you as the designer?

  18. RUGRLN says:

I never did make one till now lol, but I will today..hold on… http://twitter.com/RUGRLN

  19. RUGRLN says:

I just noticed the dimensions don’t work on my screen…you can contact me on Flickr/Twitter for a larger size I made, I’d upload to Flickr but cuz I ain’t got pro it will be reduced so there’s no point..

  20. Tom says:

    Messaged you via Twitter :)

  21. Justin says:

    there’s my submission!
see how you like it… hmmm not sure if the bird will be covered by the twitter “foreground”

    • Tom says:

Really cool design Angelo! I’ve got an essay deadline tomorrow, but after that will probably start rotating through the submissions on my Twitter page.

    • Tom says:

Great designs everyone! Just to let you know, I think I’m going to wait for a couple more, and then start rotating them frequently on my Twitter page, after I put all designs in a folder for this purpose. Thanks for the great efforts so far :)

  24. kgregstar says:

YAY, i’m working on mine right now. not too familiar with flickr so it may be on photobucket (lame).

  25. thing says:

    • Tom says:

Thanks for the entries guys. The contest actually isn’t over, but I just haven’t had a reliable internet connection for some time now. However, as it’s up and running as of today, I’ll be organizing my Twitter account asap, and will start rotating between all of these entries.

  27. Homepage says:

    a lot of cool backgrounds!
