In this tutorial, we will learn how to create a dark photo manipulation. We are going to learn the process of creating depth of field using a few advanced tools. We are going to learn how to blend images so seamlessly that it would look like a single image using the Brush tool, the Eraser tool and several adjustment layers. We will learn how to create light and darkness to make the background look seamless.
Create a new file with a width of 2200 px and a height of 3860 px at 100 dpi (Dots per Inch). Background Contents should be White.
First off, let’s open the desolate storm in Photoshop. We will be using ground from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas and change it’s layer name to “Ground”.
The result should be similar to this:
Now create new a curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette:
Use these setting:
Now create a Hue/saturation adjustment layer which can be found by pressing on the create New Fill/Adjustment layer button shown on the layer window:.
When the Hue/saturation box opens, input the following:
Now Create new Color Balance adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette .
When the Color Balance box opens, input the following :
The result should be similar to this:
Now add vector mask from the bottom of layers palette .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #000000
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this:
First off, let’s open stock in Photoshop. We will be using the girl from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas and change it’s name to “girl”.
The result should be similar to this:
In this step we are going to us the Refine Edge Tool to mask out the hair of the women with every detail.
Select the mask around the woman as shown using the Magic Wand Tool (W).
Now select the Refine Edge from Select>Refine Edge and select the On Black (B) from the View drop down list for a better view of the edge details.
Now by using the Refine Radius Tool graze the edges of the hair and select New Layer from the drop down list of ‘Output To’ and press OK to see the magic of the tool.
The result should be similar to this:
Now Create new hue/saturation adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette.Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (girl layer and hue/saturation) to make a mask:
When the hue/saturation box opens, input the following:
Now Create new brightness/contrast adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette .Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (girl layer and brightness/contrast) to make a mask.
When the brightness/contrast box opens, input the following:
The result should be similar to this:.
Make dupilcate of girl layer (Ctrl+j) and name it “girl cracks”:
In this step, we will add cracks to our image . To start, create a new layer (Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + N) and name it “crack brushes”. Now, activate the Brush tool (B) and open the brush set: “crack brushes” . To load them, simply, right click on our canvas through any layer and then click on the drop-down button as shown below:
This will prompt the contextual menu to pop up and once you see that, just click on Load Brushes.:
You will now be prompted to this directory: Adobe Photoshop > Presets > Brushes so make sure that you have put the brushes within this folder. Now locate the brush set and click OK. Right click on the canvas again using your Brush tool (B) and now you’ll notice that you have crack brushes. Now, let’s choose a brush::
Now add vector mask from the bottom of layers palette .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #000000
The result should be similar to this:
Now lets return to the girl crack layer.
Now Create new Curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette .Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Girl crack layer and Curves) to make a mask:.
When the Curves box opens, input the following:
Now Create new hue/saturation adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette.Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Girl crack layer and hue/saturation) to make a mask:.
When the hue/saturation box opens, input the following:
To enhance the dark shadows on the women go to Image>Adjustments>Exposure and set the Exposure=0.18 and Gamma Correction=0.86.
The result should be similar to this:.
Now activate elliptical marquee tool and make a selection under the girl layer and name it “Shadow” .
Now Goto Gaussian Blur and put these settings .
The result should be similar to this: .
First off, let’s open Dead Tree 1 stock in Photoshop. We will be using the tree from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas:.
select the Blue Channel from the ‘Channels’ pallet. The go to Image>Calculations and select the Blue channel from the channel drop down list.
Now by using the Levels make the image into a complete silhouette.
Select the main image and go to Select>Load Selection and select the Alpha 1 from the Channel Drop down list and press OK to select the mask around the dead tree.
Now separate the selection into a new layer:
The result should be similar to this and name it “Root”.
First off, let’s open picture frame stock in Photoshop. We will be using the frame from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas and change it’s name to “frame”:

Now Create new Color Balance adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (frame layer and Color Balance) to make a mask. When the Color Balance box opens, input the following :
Now Create new brightness/contrast adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (frame layer and brightness/contrast) to make a mask:

Now Create new hue/saturation adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette.Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (frame layer and hue/saturation) to make a mask:.
When the hue/saturation box opens, input the following:
The result should be similar to this:
add more frame to build around the model.use the model’s body lines as a guide for the flowers. Also consider the shades, bones or adjacent lines to create a visual harmony.:
Now add new layer and name it “Girl back light 1″ .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 100px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 65%
Flow: 100%
Color: #cf7c07
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this:
Now add one more new layer and name it “Girl back light 2″ .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 50px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 55%
Flow: 100%
Color: #ea9f35
Layer mode: Overlay
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this: .
Now add one more new layer and name it “Girl front light 1″ .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 50px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 55%
Flow: 100%
Color: #ea9f35
Layer mode: Overlay
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this: .
Now activate a new layer and name it “Light lines”.
Activate pen tool (p) and draw a line.
Activate brush tool and select soft round brush and make it 5 in size
Than make right click and select Stroke path.
When the Strokr path box opens, input the following:
Then again make a right click and this time select “Delete path” :
The result should be similar to this:
Repeat the same process and make lot’s of line:
Now get back to the “Root” layer and make selected by press Ctrl key and click on root layer.
Activate a new layer above Root layer and name it “Root light”.
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 50px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 90%
Flow: 100%
Color: #ea9f35
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this:
Now activate a new layer below Girl and root layer and mane it “Ground light 1″ .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #ea9f35
Now paint over the highlighted area.
Change it’s layer mode to “Overlay” and opacity to “65%” .
The result should be similar to this:
Now again activate a new layer and name it “Ground light lines”.
Activate brush tool and select soft round brush and make it 5 in size
Activate pen tool (p) and draw a line.
Than make right click and select Stroke path.
When the Stroke path box opens, input the following:
Then again make a right click and this time select “Delete path” :
Now create a Layer style layer which can be found by pressing on the Create New Layer style button shown on the layer window:
The result should be similar to this:
Repeat the same process and make lot’s of lines:
Now ,let’s open Dark Angel Wings Psd in Photoshop. We will be using the Wings from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas.
Click the Dark Angel Wings Psd and press V to activate the Move Tool. Left-click the image and drag the image to the main canvas and change layer name to “Wings”.
The result should be similar to this:
Activate a new layer and name it “Wings light”.
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 100px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #ea9f35
Now paint around the wings.
The result should be similar to this:
First off, let’s open Crow stock in Photoshop. We will be using the Crow from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas and name it “Crow 1″ :

Now Create new Curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette .Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Crow 1 layer and Curves adjustment) to make a mask.
When the Curves adjustment box opens, input the following :

Add another Crow and name it “Crow 2″ make same adjustments:
Now let’s activate a new layer and name it “Crow light” .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #ea9f35
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this:
Now activate 1 more layer and name it “Crow 1 eye”.
Activate elliptical marquee tool and make a round selection above crow’s eye and fill it with “#ea9f35″ color .
Now repeat the same process with Crow 2 .
Now, let’s do some over all image adjustments .
Activate Gradient Tool (G).See as below :
When the Gradient Tool box opens, input the following:
Now change it’s layer mode to “Overlay” and opacity to “25%” :
The result should be similar to this:
Now create a Exposure adjustment layer which can be found by pressing on the Create New Fill/Adjustment layer button shown on the layer window:
When the Exposure box opens, input the following:
Now create a Gradient map which can be found by pressing on the Create New Fill/Adjustment layer button shown on the layer window:
When the Gradient map box opens, input the following:
Change it’s layer mode to “Soft light” and opacity to “10%” .
Now create a Exposure adjustment layer which can be found by pressing on the Create New Fill/Adjustment layer button shown on the layer window:
When the Exposure box opens, input the following:
Now create a Curves adjustment layer which can be found by pressing on the Create New Fill/Adjustment layer button shown on the layer window:
When the Curves box opens, input the following:
Now create a Hue/saturation adjustment layer which can be found by pressing on the Create New Fill/Adjustment layer button shown on the layer window:
When the Hue/saturation box opens, input the following:

Great work Vikas! Really like the final outcome of this tutorial. The contrast is spot on and I really like the way you added your light effects and colored lines. The birds and the cracks are a nice touch as well!
