How to Draw a Detailed Coffee Maker Illustration

Often even more advanced Photoshop users shy away from illustration in Photoshop, despite it having some very robust drawing tools at your disposal.

Often times the issue is the lack of a clear guide to help you through the process. Well today our resident expert Andrei Marius will show you how to create a super clean coffee maker illustration using some of Photoshop’s advanced drawing tools.

Despite this being a long and in depth tutorial, each step is broken down into clear step by step instructions, so whatever your level of design expertise you can follow along and learn some great techniques in the process.

Clean design couldn’t be more on trend right now, some being able to create slick illustrations like this one will allow you to create incredible custom icons and graphics to support your (or your client’s) clean website design.

Final Image

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Step 1

Open Photoshop and hit Control + N to create a new document. Enter all the data shown in the following image and click OK. Enable the Grid (View > Show > Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap To > Grid). For starters you will need a grid every 5px. Simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices and focus on the Grid section. Enter 5 in the Gridline Every box and 1 in the Subdivision box. Also, set the grid color at #a7a7a7. Once you set all these properties click OK. Try not to get discouraged by all that grid. It will ease your work later. You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes.

Step 2

Focus on the Toolbar and set the foreground color at #ed4505. Pick the Ellipse Tool and create a 185 by 30px squeezed circle. Make sure that this new vector shape stays selected and switch to the Rectangle Tool. Focus on the top bar, check the Add button and simply add a 185 by 10px vector path as shown in the second image. The Snap to Grid should ease your work. Get back to the Ellipse Tool and make sure that your orange vector shape is still selected. Check the Add button from the top bar and add a new 185 by 30px squeezed circle as shown in the third image. Move to the Layers panel and double click on the existing vector shape to open the Layer Style window. Activate the Inner Shadow and the Gradient Overlay then enter the properties shown in the following images. The white numbers from the Gradient Overlay image stand for Location percentage.

Step 3

Pick the Ellipse Tool, create a 185 by 30px vector shape and place it as shown in the first image. Move to the Layers panel, open the Layer Style window for this new orange shape and enter the properties shown in the following images. The yellow zero from the Gradient Overlay image stands for Opacity percentage.

Step 4

Set the foreground color at black, pick the Ellipse Tool, create a 140 by 15px vector shape and place it as shown in the first image. Move to the Layers panel, open the Layer Style window for this new vector shape and enter the properties shown in the following images.

Step 5

For this step you will need a grid every 1px. Simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices and enter 1 in the Gridline Every box. Set the foreground color at #ed4505 and pick the Rounded Rectangle Tool. Set the radius at 5px, create a 24 by 15px vector shape and place it as shown in the first image. Send this new vector shape to back (Shift + CTRL + [ ), open the Layer Style window and enter the properties shown in the following image.

Step 6

For the following steps you need a grid every 5px. Simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices and enter 5 in the Gridline Every box. Set the foreground color at #ddf1ff and make sure that the Rounded Rectangle Tool is still active. Set the radius at 20px, create a 170 by 155px vector shape, place it as shown in the first image and go to Edit > Transform > Warp. Select Arc Lower from the Warp drop-down menu, enter 7 in the Bend box and hit Enter. With this blue vector shape still selected switch to the Rectangle Tool.
Are you wary of using vectors in Photoshop? The truth is that Photoshop can be an excellent vector program if you get to learn it’s more advanced drawing features.

This tutorial we’re going to dive in and walk you through the basics of Photoshop’s drawing capabilities.

You’ll be learning how to create a realistic old photo film icon.

Let’s get started!

Final Image

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Step 1

Open Photoshop and hit Control + N to create a new document. Enter all the data shown in the following image and click OK.

Master Photoshop’s Vector Capabilities: Create a Detailed Microphone Illustration

If you’re really comfortable in Photoshop you may love creating stuff like photo manipulations, website layouts and other graphics.

However, there’s a good chance that you’ve never bothered to master vector design. Often Photoshop users will simply assume that it’s something reserved for Illustrator pros, and Illustrator can be too time consuming to learn, or too expensive to buy.

Many people end up outsourcing vector work, which puts a big whole in their pocket.

Wouldn’t you rather master vector design in the software you’re already familiar with – Photoshop?

Photoshop actually has some really powerful vector capabilities, and today you’ll learn them, for free.

You’ll be creating a detailed microphone illustration that’s totally vector based. You’ll master things like smart objects, warping your vector shapes, creating custom patterns, textures, lighting and more, all within a clean, non-destructive vector workflow.

Let’s dive right in!

Final Image

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Step 1

Open Photoshop and hit Control + N to create a new document. Enter all the data shown in the following image and click OK. Enable the Grid (View > Show > Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap To > Grid). For the moment you need a grid every 5px. Go to Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices and focus on the Grid section. For starters you will need a grid every 1px. Simpy enter 1 in the Gridline Every box and 1 in the Subdivision box. Also, set the color of the grid at #a7a7a7. Once you set all these properties click OK. Don’t get discouraged by all that grid. It will ease your work later. You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes.

Step 2

Set the foreground color at #323232, pick the Ellipse Tool and create a 3px circle. Make sure that this little vector shape is selected, switch to the Direct Selection Tool and select the four anchor points that make up your shape. Hold Alt, click inside this shape and drag it 5px to the right. In the end things should look like in the second image. Repeat this technique until you have a row with thirty one circles.

Step 3

Focus on the shape made in the previous step and make sure that the Direct Selection Tool is still active. Select all the anchor points that make up the vector shape made in the previous step, hold Alt, click inside some of those circles and drag a copy 7px down as shown in the first image. Repeat this technique until you have thirty-three rows.

Step 4

Reselect the vector edited in the previous step. Pick the Ellipse Tool, check the Add button from the top and draw a new 3px circle and place it between the top rows as shown below. Focus on this new circle, select it using the Direct Selection Tool, make a copy and drag it five pixels to the right. Repeat this technique until you have a row with 30 circles as shown in the following image.

Step 5

Keep focusing on the existing vector shape, select the row of circles added in the previous step made a copy and drag it 10px down. Repeat these technique thirty more times. In the end things should look like in the following image.

Step 6

Switch to "gridline every 5px". So, simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices and enter 5 in the Gridline Every box. Set the foreground color at #959595, pick the Rounded Rectangle Tool. Set the radius at 120px, create a 195 by 405px vector shape and send it to back (Shift + Control + [ ).

Step 7

Focus on the Layers panel, hold Control and click on the vector shape made in the previous step. This should load a simple selection around your shape. Keep focusing on the Layers panel, pick the Selection Tool(V) and select the complex vector shape made in the starting shapes. Move to the top bar and click on the "Align vertical centers" and "Align horizontal centers" buttons. In the end things should look like in the second image. Finally, get rid of that selection (Control + D).

Step 8

Select the complex vector shape and go to Edit > Transform > Warp. Select Fisheye from the Warp drop-down menu, enter 40 in the Bend box and hit Enter.

Step 9

Make sure that your complex vector shape is still selected and go again to Edit > Transform > Warp. Select Bulge from the Warp drop-down menu, enter 60 in the Bend box and hit Enter.

Step 10

Make sure that your complex vector shape is still selected and go one more time to Edit > Transform > Warp. Select Bulge from the Warp drop-down menu, check the Orientation button, enter 18 in the Bend box and hit Enter.

Step 11

Select the smart object made in the previous step and duplicate it (Control + J). Select this copy, open the Layer Style window and edit the Drop Shadow as shown in the following image.

Step 53

Select the smart object made in the previous step and duplicate it (Control + J). Select this copy, open the Layer Style window and edit the Drop Shadow as shown in the following image.

Step 54

Select the smart object made in the previous step and duplicate it (Control + J). Select this copy, open the Layer Style window and enter the properties shown in the following images.

Step 55

Next, you need to load a simple selection around the steel components of your stopwatch. Here’s a quick way you can do it. Focus on the Layers panel, select all the steely pieces and duplicate them. Select these copies and turn them to a single smart object. Now, hold Control and click on this smart object (in the Layers panel). This should load your selection. Make sure that it stays active, create a new layer (Shift + Control + Alt + N) and select it. Set the foreground color at black, pick the Paint Bucket Tool and simply click inside your selection. In the end it should look like in the second image. Get rid of that selection (Control + D) then select the smart object made in the beginning of the step and simply delete it.

Step 56

Select the layer made in the previous step, lower the Fill to 0% and open the Layer Style window. Activate the Color section, set the blending mode to Color, lower the opacity to 50% and pick golden yellow (#ffd76b) for the color. This is a pretty easy way for you to recolor this stopwatch. Obviously, you can use different colors or you can increase/decrease the opacity percentage.

Step 57

Finally, let’s add a simple background. Hit Shift + Control + Alt + N to create a new layer. Select it, send it to back (Shift + Control + [ ) then fill it with #505050 using the Paint Bucket Tool. Open the Layer Style window for this new layer and enter the properties shown in the following image.

Step 58

Focus on the Layers panel and turn the layer made in the previous step into a smart object. Select it and go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Enter the properties shown in the following image, click OK and you’re done.

And We’re Done!

Here is how your final result should look.

Members Area Tutorial: How to Create an Old TV Illustrated Icon

Hi there. In the following icon tutorial you will learn how to create an old tv illustrated icon.

You will learn how to work within a professional non destructive vector workflow. This includes mastering Photoshop’s shape and drawing capabilities, and using smart objects and advanced blending options.

Whether you’re interested in icon design or not, this is a must for getting to know some of Photoshop’s more advanced functions and expanding your design repertoire.

Final Image

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Step 1

First, have this Wooden Textures Pack. You will only need the one named "QUARTERSAWN BEECH . Open this image in Photoshop and go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Enter the properties shown in the following image then move to the Layers panel. Right click on your texture and click on Merge Visible. Hit Control + A to select everything then hit Control + C to copy this selection. Close this document without saving it.

Step 2

Create a new document. Make it 600px wide and tall, enter all the data shown in the following image and click OK. Enable the Grid (View > Show > Grid) and the Snap to Grid (View > Snap To > Grid). For the moment you need a grid every 5px. Go to Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices and focus on the Grid section. Enter 5 in the Gridline Every box and 1 in the Subdivision box. Also, set the color of the grid at #a7a7a7. Once you set all these properties click OK. Don’t get discouraged by all that grid. It will ease your work later. You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes.

Step 3

Hit Control + V to paste the texture made in the first step. Select this new layer from the Layers panel and hit Control + T. Hold Shift, resize this layer, make sure that the width is set at 330px then hit Enter. Return to the Layers panel, select this layer and make three copies (Control + J). Keep focusing on the Layers panel and turn off the visibility for all these texture layers. We’ll use them one by one in the following steps.

Step 4

Turn on the visibility for the top texture layer and focus on the top side. Set the foreground color at black, grab the Rounded Rectangle Tool, set the radius at 5px, create a 300 by 10px vector shape and place it as shown in the first image. Move to the Layers panel, hold Control and click on this black vector path to load a simple selection around it. Make sure that this selection remains active and delete the black vector path from the Layers panel. Select that visible texture layer and click on the Add Layer Mask button from the bottom of the Layers panel. In the end your masked texture layer should look like in the third image. Hit Control + D to get rid of that selection. Return to the Layers panel, right click on the masked texture layer and click on Convert to Smart Object. Select this new smart object and go to Edit > Transform > Perspective. Focus on the bottom side, stretch it as shown in fourth image then hit Enter. Get back to the Layers panel, double click on the smart object to open the Layer Style window and enter the properties shown in the following images.

Step 5

Turn on the visibility for the top texture layer and focus on the bottom side. Grab the Rounded Rectangle Tool, set the radius at 3px, create a 300 by 15px vector shape and place it as shown in the first image. Select it and go to Edit > Transform > Perspective. Focus on the bottom side, contract it as shown in second image then hit Enter. Move to the Layers panel and load a simple selection around this black vector path. Make sure that this selection remains active and delete the black vector path from the Layers panel. Reselect the visible texture layer, click on the Add Layer Mask button and get rid of that selection (Control + D). Return to the Layers panel and double click on the masked texture layer to open the Layer Style window. Enter the properties shown in the following images and click OK.

Step 6

Turn on the visibility for the top texture layer, select it and bring it to front (Shift + Control + ] ). Pick a simple blue for the foreground color, grab the Rounded Rectangle Tool, set the radius at 8px, create a 320 by 200px vector shape and place it as shown in the first image. Load a selection around this vector shape, select the visible texture layer (from the Layers panel) and click on the Add Layer Mask button. Get rid of that selection (Control + D) then select the blue vector path and lower its Fill to 0%.

That’s the end of the preview!

Members Area Tutorial: Create a Suitcase Portfolio Illustration in Photoshop

Hey PSDFANs!

In this week’s advanced tutorial we’re going to be learning some awesome drawing techniques in Photoshop.

Never used Photoshop for drawing or illustration? Don’t worry! I’m going to walk you through every step of the way.

We’ll be creating a super realistic suitcase portfolio pretty well from scratch using Photoshop’s powerful drawing capabilities. You’ll also be following a very professional workflow, using non-destructive techniques and cutting edge organization.

Let’s get started!

Final Image

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Step 1

Open Photoshop and hit Control + N to create a new document. Enter all the data shown in the following image and click OK. It will ease your work. You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes.

Step 2

Pick a light grey for the foreground color. Grab the Rounded Rectangle, set the radius at 10px and create a 355 by 160px vector path. Select it and go to Edit > Transform > Warp. Select Arc Lower from the Warp drop-down menu, enter 5 in the Bend box and hit Enter. Move to the Layers panel and double click on this vector path to open the Layer Style window. Activate the Inner Shadow, the Bevel and Emboss, the Gradient Overlay and the Pattern Overlay enter the properties shown in the following images then click OK. For the Pattern Overlay section you will need this pattern.

Step 3

Next, you need a grid every 1px. Simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices and enter 1 in the Gridline Every box. Set the foreground color at #74573a, grab the Rounded Rectangle Tool and draw a 1 by 5px vector path. Switch to the Direct Selection Tool, select all the anchor points that make up this new vector path, hold Alt, click on this shape and drag up 10px. This should add a copy of your path. Make sure that there’s a 5px gap between these two paths.

Step 4

Repeat the technique mentioned in the previous step and add nine new paths as shown in the first image. Select this dashed path and place it as shown in the second image. Open the Layer Style window for this path and enter the properties shown in the following images.

Step 5

Duplicate the path made in the previous step (Control + J). Select this copy, drag it to the right and place it as shown in the following image.

Step 6

Return to "gridine every 5px". So, go to Edit > Preferences > Guides, Grid & Slices and enter 5 in the Gridline Every box. Pick a light grey for the foreground color. Grab the Rounded Rectangle, make sure that the radius is set at 10px, create a 355 by 180px vector path and place it as shown in the first image. Select it and go to Edit > Transform > Warp. Select Bulge from the Warp drop-down menu, check the Orientation button, enter 7 in the Bend box and 2 in the "V" box then hit Enter.
