If you love creating abstract, visually awesome work in Photoshop, then this tutorial is for you. Learn how to create a surreal scene featuring a giant maze, constructed by 3D blocks.

You’ll learn all kinds of techniques, such as working with perspective, applying texture and lighting and much more.

Let’s get started shall we?

What You’ll Be Creating:

Here’s a look at the outcome you’ll be able to produce by the end of this lesson:

Resources Used In This Tutorial

Texture

Sunset (Cloud)

Step 1

Start by creating a new document (Ctrl+N) for scene we are going to create. Let the document be 2500 pixels wide and 1681 pixels high. Firstly, fill (Shift+F5) the document with black.

Go to view in the menu bar and make sure to check ‘extra’ in the option box given. Then, click ‘show’ to come another option box up. Make sure to check ‘guide’ in the box.

Now create crossing guide lines as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 2

Proceed to create some other lines which will be used as guide lines to draw maze like shape. To do this purpose, activate the line tool in the tool panel. Set its weight to 3 pixels.

Start to create the guide lines as shown below. I used red for the color of the lines.

After creating the lines on the left part, merge the lines into a single layer. Duplicate (Ctrl+J) the layer and flip the duplicate horizontally. Move it to the right part of the document to have the guide line as shown in the screenshot. Merge the two line layers into a single layer. I named this layer lines.

Reduce the opacity of this lines layer to about 40%.

Step 3

Now we are ready to create the shape. Create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N). I named this layer block shape 1. Take the pen tool and with the tool, create rectangular path on this shape 1 layer. Make sure to follow the guide lines to have right perspective of the shape. Right click on the path to show the path option box. Choose fill path.

Fill the path with color of #9a9a9b

Here is what we have now:

Step 4

Next we will create another rectangular shape on the left side. Create the other two guide lines crossing the leftmost corners (line 1 and 2) and another guide line (line 3) crossing the two lines.

Create a new layer below the shape 1 layer. I named this layer shape 2. By following the lines previously made, create rectangular shape with the pen tool as we did in previous step 3. I fill the shape with lighter color as shown in the screenshot:

Step 5

Finish the shape by creating the two other rectangular shapes. Remember to always follow the guide lines to keep the perspective of the shape. I created these two layers on different layers. I named these layers shape 3 and shape 4.

Here is the result I created:

Step 6

Proceed to give the shape some shading. Create a new layer above the shape 3 layer. Make sure to give this new layer a clipping mask.

Take gradient tool in the tool panel and choose linier gradient with opacity of about 15%. Make sure to set the foreground color to black. Open the gradient editor and choose foreground to transparent gradient.

Start giving some shading on the shape 3 layer by hold- clicking the gradient on the top of the image and drag downward a bit.

Give some shading to the shape 4 where needed as well.

Step 7

Now we will add some line on the shape 1. Go and select the shape 1 layer again. When we are still active on the shape 1 layer, go to layer > layer style > stroke:

Here is the result. Select all the shape layers and merge them (Ctrl+E) into a single layer. I named this layer front right block.

Step 8

Create another front block on the left with the same techniques as we did the previous front right block.

Step 9

Then, again create the middle front block. Select all the front block layers and hit Ctrl+G to group them into a folder. I named this folder front block.

Step 10

With the same way as we did in previous steps, create some rear blocks on the left side. Here are the first three blocks I created and named them as block 1,2 and 3.

I finished the rear left side by creating some other blocks:

Step 11

Proceed to create some blocks on the rear right side. I Created 7 blocks for this side.

Step 12

Next we will add some white light between the aisles of the blocks. Let’s start giving the light on the aisles behind the right front block. To achieve this, create a new layer behind the right front block layer. Take a very soft round brush set to 20-30% opacity. On the new layer, paint the soft white light as indicated by the blue arrows.

Give some white light behind the aisles behind the left front block as well.

Here is the result I created after I gave some light on the aisles of the rear left blocks.

Step 13

Do the same way to give some light on the aisles of the right rear block. After finishing the maze, select all the block layers and merge them into a single layer. I named this layer maze.

Step 14

Now we are going to create background for the scene. Take the linier gradient again. Make sure to set the foreground color to black and the background to white. Choose the foreground to background gradient in the gradient editor.

Next, change the black background by filling it linier gradient color of black and white. Here is the result I did:

Step 15

Open the texture image on the document. Position this texture image above the background layer. Take free transform tool and scale its size to cover the background.

Move the texture downwards so it is supposed to be the ground of the maze.

Reduce the opacity of the texture layer to about 65%.

Step 16

Give this texture a layer mask by clicking the mask icon located at the bottom of the layer panel.

Take a very soft round brush set to about 15-20% opacity. With black color, stroke the brush on areas around the texture to give it some masking. Here is the mask I created on the texture.

And here is the masked texture now:

Duplicate the texture layer and set the duplicate to soft light blending at 50% opacity.

Step 17

Open the sky image on the document. Scale its size and position it above the texture layer.

Give this sky layer a layer mask and mask some part of this sky image.

Step 18

With the sky layer still selected, go to layer > new adjustment layers > hue/saturation. Make sure to give this hue/saturation layer a clipping mask.

Here is the result:

Step 19

Create a new layer above the sky layer. Take again a very soft round brush at size of about 800-900 pixels. With color, paint some white light behind the maze. I named this layer light. We can duplicate this layer and set the duplicate to soft light to get more vivid light.

step 20

Proceed to work on the maze. Select the maze layer and mask some part of this layer as indicated in selection in the screenshot.

Here is maze will look after being masked.

step 21

Duplicate the maze layer and position the duplicate above the original layer with a clipping mask. Mask some part of the duplicate and set it to multiply at 75% opacity.

Then, duplicate again the texture used in the background. Place the duplicate above the maze copy layer with a clipping mask. Scale its size.

With the texture layer still selected, go to filter > other > high pass. Then set this texture layer to soft light at 70% opacity.

Here is the result. Select all the maze layers and group them into a folder. I named this folder maze.

Step 22

Create another new layer above the maze folder. On this new layer, paint soft white light in front of the middle front block as indicated in selection in the screenshot.

Here is what I created:

Step 23

Finally, we will alter the overall color of the scene. We do this by just simply giving new adjustment layers: color balance and photo filter on the topmost position in the layer panel.

Set the color balance layer to normal at 100% opacity and photo filter to normal at 50% opacity:

Members Area Tutorial: Create a Music Event Poster by Following a Professional’s Workflow

Hey design students!

Today’s design lesson is a great opportunity to follow along with the workflow of a respected design professional. Eric Vasquez is one of our most popular teachers, and has worked with some huge companies throughout his illustrious design career.

Over to Eric…

“In this tutorial I will be walking you through the steps to create your own print ready poster. In this particular case it will feature a singer but the same techniques and rules apply to just about any type of poster that you would like to create.

I will be explaining some print terminology as well as showing you how to get the most out of your photos even if they’re under exposed to start with. We’ll also use seemingly ordinary typefaces combined with some cool typography tips to create something unique and different. If you are all ready to get started then fire up Photoshop and let’s get down to business.”

- Eric Vasquez

Final Image

Let’s take a look at a preview of the image that we are going to be creating:

Resources Used In This Tutorial

Central Park B&W 1 from Stock Xchng

Singer from Dreamstock

Paper Texture from Stock Xchng

Old Book Cover from Stock Xchng

Textures 86 by ~Sanami276 on deviantART

Textures 99 by ~Sanami276 on deviantART

Step 1

The first thing we are going to do is open up the image of our singer from Dreamstime.

Press Command/Ctrl + Alt/Option + I on your keyboard to bring up the Image Size Dialog Box. Once the window appears, make sure that you Document Size is set to inches as shown here:

Change the width of your image to 11 inches and press OK.

Once your image is scaled up, select the ‘Background’ layer in your Layers Palette and press Command/Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer. After doing that you can turn the visibility of your original layer off.

Depending on the size and resolution of the original image that you decided to use, you may not want to scale it up too much, especially if it has a lot of detail in it. In this particular case it works out because the image is mostly a silhouette with a few areas of detail.

Step 2

The original color mode of this image is set to grayscale, so go to the Image Menu and choose Mode>RGB to change it. Normally if you were working on something for print you would generally want to use CMYK instead, but if you are going to be printing your file out at the end you can always flatten your image and convert it at the end. Just make sure not to save over your layered RGB file in case you need to go back and make any changes or tweaks.

You will then be prompted with a pop-up box asking if you would like to merge the document, we want to say ‘Don’t Merge’ for this part.

Step 3

From here, make sure that you have your newly duplicated layer selected in your Layers Palette and then go to the Image Menu once again. This time we are going to select an option called Calculations.

When the dialog box appears, go to the Channels option and choose the color has the most contrast – generally this will be the red channel. After that hit OK your press the Enter Key on your keyboard.

Next, go to the Channels Palette over where your layers are and you will notice a new Alpha 1 Channel has been created.

Step 4

Press the ‘O’ key on your keyboard, which is the shortcut for the Dodge and Burn Tools. Make sure that you have your Burn Tool selected and target the Midtones with an Exposure setting of around 50%.

Use the Burn Tool to fill in the singer so that you eventually have a solid black silhouette on a white background. You may have to make a couple of passes over the figure but keep at it until it’s completely black.

When you are happy with your silhouette, hold down the Command/Ctrl Key and click on the layer thumbnail icon indicated below by the red bounding box.
This will activate your selection and you should now see marching ants around your image.

Return to your Layers Palette while your selection is still active and press Command/Ctrl + Shift + I to invert your selection. Alternatively you could just go to the Image Menu and choose Adjustments>Invert.

Once you have done that, click on the Layer Mask Icon at the bottom of your Layers Palette to mask out the background.

This method of silhouetting an image works particularly well for hair, most often when you have an image with a good amount of contrast between the figure and the background. If you are lacking contrast however, you could apply a Levels Adjustment to your Alpha Channel in order to bump up the darks or lights.

Hold down the Control Key and click on your masked layer. When the dropdown menu appears choose ‘Convert to Smart Object’ as shown below:

There are many benefits of using Smart Objects as opposed to normal Raster Layers and one of those benefits is that when you resize an image a couple of times with Raster Layers it will result in a noticeable loss in quality. If you use a Smart Object instead, it will retain the quality of the image so you can scale it up or down as many times as needed.

Step 5

Next we are going to create a New Document. Make your file 18.5” x 24.5” and set the Resolution to 300dpi. This is going to serve as our main poster file.

Create another New Document and make this one 18” x 24” with the same Resolution Setting.

Fill your 18” x 24” document with solid black using your Paint Bucket Tool (G). From here, hold down the Shift and Command/Ctrl Keys simultaneously and drag the layer over to your main poster file.

By holding down these keys while dragging your layer over, it should drop it right in the middle of your poster file. Just in case it lands off to one side or the other, select the black fill layer and your background at the same time and then use the Align Tools at the top of the screen to ensure that everything is centered nicely.

Press Command/Ctrl + R to show your Rulers in case they aren’t yet visible. Drag a couple of guides around the edges of the black box. This will let us know where our bleed area is. Once your guides are in place you can turn off or throw away the black layer all together.

For those who are not familiar with the term ‘Bleed’ this is something you generally do in print to leave a bit of extra room for whoever is trimming your pages so you don’t end up with a white border around your poster. Some files will also require that you stay within a certain area, which would be commonly referred to as Safety or Live Area. This is only usually if you have important logos or copy that you want to make sure you don’t lose when your file is trimmed.

Now that we have set up our main poster file with guides to indicate our Bleed Area, we can bring over our silhouetted singer Smart Object that we created earlier on. If you need to, scale him up a bit further using a Free Transform (Command/Ctrl + T) and dragging any of the four corners outwards while holding down the Shift Key. Use the image below as a rough guide for sizing and placement.

Step 6

Create a new layer below your Smart Object and use your Paint Bucket Tool (G) to fill the layer with #EA00FF.

Your layers should look like this:

Hold down your Command/Ctrl Key and click on the layer thumbnail icon indicated below by the black bounding box around the small picture.

Once you have an active selection around the guy, switch to your Brush Tool (B) and use a soft round brush at about 20% opacity.

Create a new layer just above the layer with the singer and using a dark color that was sampled from the darker parts of the image, paint over the area shown here:

This will darken the back of the head so we have better separation from the background color.

Step 7

Select your Singer Layer and press Command/Ctrl + J to make a copy of it on the layer above. After you have done that, go to the Image Menu and choose Adjustments>Shadows/Highlights as shown here:

Use the following settings when prompted with the dialog box.

That’s the end of the preview!

Step 1

In this step we are going to arrange the soldiers in order.

1)	Create a new canvas in Photoshop with the dimensions Width=3000px and Height=4147px. Then import the image of the Soldier on to the canvas and it in the center as shown.

2)	Now import two more soldiers on to the canvas and place them as shown, illustrating as if they got each other’s back.

Step 2

In this step we are going to create the Buildings BG.

1)	Erase the sky in the Buildings image using Magic Wand Tool (W) and import the buildings on to the canvas and place them in the background.

2)	Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the buildings layer and set the Saturation level to -59.

3)	Now create an Exposure adjustment layer to the buildings layer and set the Exposure level to -0.46 and Gamma Correction to -0.50.

4)	Create a new layer above the buildings layer and paint the shadows as shown using the Soft Round Brush (B).

Step 3

In this step we will be creating the night sky in the scene.

1)	Import the image of the sky on to the working canvas and place it behind the buildings layer.

2)	Now de-saturate the sky layer to -62 using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

3)	Using the Exposure adjustment layer increase the Offset value to -0.0174 to enhance the dark values of the sky image.

4)	Now create a Curves adjustment layer to the sky layer and set the RGB curves as shown.

Step 4

In this step we are going to create fire sparks flying around in the scene.

1)	Create a new layer under the soldier’s layer and paint the sparks as shown using the fire sparks brush using the color #f7c30f.

2)	With the sparks layer selected go to Filters>Blur>Motion Blur and set the Angle to 14 and Distance=23px. This creates a natural depth to the sparks.

That’s the end of the preview!

Step 1

This Tutorial will teach you how to render a retro toy box of a robo-mascot for a DJ producer.

Start by creating a 722 width x 984 high pixels (100dpi) document.

Download the ‘assets’ folder in the resources section for this tutorial. This will contain necessary elements you’ll need to create this piece.

Open the “Cardboard” image you will find on the assets, using the Rectangular Marquee Tool make a selection of the image, then Copy and Paste it on the new document, rename the layer “Box Front”. Go to Edit > Transform > Perspective and transform it as shown.
Next, using the Rectangular Marquee Tool again, make a selection of the lower part, Copy and Paste it on a new Layer “Box Profile” and transform it as shown, as we did before.

Step 2

Create a new layer “Lower Box Shadow”, set its Blending Mode to Multiply and 40% Opacity, make Ctrl + left Click on the “Box Profile” layer, to select its content, next, select black color and fill it on the new Layer.

Step 3

Now, open the “Robot” image from the asstes, and import it on a new Layer “Robot”, use the Guides to place it on the middle of the box.

Step 4

Using the Pen Tool, draw a Work Path for the window as shown, once finished create its selection.

With the selection active, Copy and Paste the piece of window from the “Box Front” Layer, to a new Layer, “Front Cover”.

Step 5

Now, make Ctrl + Left Click on the “Front Cover” Layer to select its content, then go to Selection > Transform Selection > Contract, and apply a 13 pixels transformation.

Create a new layer “Sticker 1″, select the #f5f3db code color on the Color Picker, and with the Paint Bucket Tool, fill the active selection.

Step 6

Apply the Bevel and Emboss Layer Style settings as shown, to get the following result.

Step 7

Grab the Erase Tool, and with a Hard Round Brush, erase some parts of the sticker to get an irregular contour as shown.

That’s the end of the preview!

Members Area Tutorial: Create a Beautiful Mixed Media Portrait in Photoshop

Digital art is great, but it can begin to look a little generic after a while. Sleek photo manipulations become a little dull if that’s all you ever create.

Luckily, it’s possible to design some more creative looking designs using Photoshop. This includes mixed media style work, that emulates the work of non-digital compositions.

Today’s advanced tutorial will teach you how to create a beautiful mixed media portrait effect.

You can use this effect for high-end client work, but it could equally be an amazing way to impress your friends and colleagues by converting your personal photos across social media. Why not bring your portfolio site’s about page to life with a super creative mixed media self portrait?

In today’s tutorial you’ll work with:

Professional blending techniques

Applying textures and stocks correctly

Creatively using filters for drawing purposes

And much more!

Let’s dive right in!

Step 1

Create a new document and fill it with white. I use the size of 1000×1100 but feel free to make your own. Open paper 1 stock. Use Move Tool (V) to drag it into our document and lower opacity to 30%:

Step 2

Drag paper 2 into our canvas and continue lowering opacity to 30%:

Step 3

I use an adjustment layer to change color of the picture. Go to Layer-New Adjustment Layer-Hue/Saturation:

Step 4

Open the model stock. You can use your own photo, but I advise that you choose a high quality one, as this will give you a much better end result.

Extract the model and place her at the middle of our picture. Then click the second button of Layer Pallete to add layer mask to model one.

Use a soft black brush to remove the hair part then change brush to splatter ones. Choose some from these brush and blend the bottom of model with background:

Step 5

Create a new layer with Clipping Mask options for model layer. Use Clone Tool (S) to remove model necklace:

Don’t worry if the result doesn’t look perfect, we’ll add more element there later.

Step 6

I make an adjustment layer with Clipping Mask to reduce model saturation:

Step 7

Open watercolor 1 stock. I choose one from this pack and place it onto model shoulder, also set this layer under model one.

Change the mode to Multipy 100% and use layer mask with opacity about 50-55% to blur the left side:

Step 8

Create a Hue/Saturation layer (Clipping Mask) for this watercolor layer (I name it “watercolor 1″):

Step 9

Open watercolor 2 stock. I rotate it using Cmd/Ctrl+T and place it at the shoulder area, put the mode as Multipy 100% (set this layer above model one). Then I use layer mask to erase remained dark edge after changing the mode:

Apply a Hue/Saturation layer (Clipping Mask) to create a subtle effect:

That’s the end of the preview!

Members Area Tutorial: Create a Complete Game Experience Photo Manipulation Scene

Today’s tutorial is something a little different, but is perfect if you’re interested in not just creating stunning artwork, but artwork that’s usable for real life projects.

We’re going to be learning how to create a dark photo manipulation scene, and then frame this scene within a video-game type screen.

In this sense the tutorial is really two tutorials in one, as you’re be working with photo manipulation techniques, but combining these with interface creation walkthroughs.

You’ll be mastering techniques such as:

Digital painting realistic dead branches and hair.

Managing skin tone, makeup and how to make your character look dramatic

Creating artificial dramatic light effects.

Effective use of blending modes.

Creating a detailed videogame interface using a variety of professional techniques.

And much much more!

Ok, let’s get started shall we?

Final Image

As always, this is the final image that we’ll be creating:

Step 1

Create a new canvas in Photoshop and import the image of the model onto the canvas.

Step 2

In this step we are going to add a background in the scene.

1)	Import the image of the forest on to the canvas and place it beneath the model layer.

2)	Now create an Exposure adjustment layer to the forest layer and set the Exposure to -1.79, Offset=-0.0434 and Gamma Correction = 0.69.

3)	Now create a Curves adjustment layer to the model layer and set the RGB curves as shown.

4)	Create a Hue/Saturation layer to the model layer and set the Saturation level to -42.

5)	Now create a new layer and paint shadow at the bottom edges of model’s dress as shown.

Step 3

In this step we are going to create a gothic tribal tattoo effect on the skin of the model.

1)	Using the Brush Tool (B) draw a rough sketch of the tattoo design on model as shown.

2)	Now select a mask in the shape of the tattoo using the Pen Tool (P), then separate the selection into a new layer.

3)	Create an Exposure adjustment layer to the separated skin layer and set the Exposure level to +0.28, Offset=-0.0522 and Gamma Correction to 0.46.

4)	Now create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and set the Saturation level to -57.

5)	Repeat the same procedure and create the tattoo on the other side of the model’s neck as shown. Then create an Exposure adjustment layer to it and set the Exposure level to -0.05, Offset=-0.0043 and Gamma Correction to 0.87.

6)	Now de-saturate the tattoo layer to -57 using the hue/Saturation layer.

7)	Select the color #804e66 and paint the hair strands as shown.

Step 4

In this step we will be working on slight makeup re-touching on the model’s face.

1)	Create a new layer above the model layer and paint black color above the eyes as shown and reduce the Opacity of the layer to 56%.

2)	Now paint Red shade under the eyes as show in a new layer and set the Blending model of the layer to Overlay.

Step 5

In this step we will be creating the feather prop to the model.

1)	Import the image of the wings onto the canvas and place them behind the model as shown.

2)	Now duplicate the image of the feathers and flip it horizontally and place it adjacent to the previous feather layer as shown.

3)	Now select a rough mask cover half the portion of left side feathers and add a feather of 35px, then create an Exposure adjustment layer to it and set the Exposure to -0.93 Gamma Correction=0.57.

4)	Using the Brush Tool (B) paint dark shadow as shown in a new layer placed in between the feathers and the model.

Step 6

In this step we are going to paint the fog in the scene.

1)	Create a new layer on the top of layers pallet and paint the white fog as shown using the fog brush.

2)	Import the image of the dead branch on to the canvas and place it on the right side of the scene as shown.

3)	Again paint the fog in a new layer.

4)	Create a new layer and paint black fog at the bottom of the scene. Make sure to place this layer beneath the fog2 layer.

5)	Create a black bokeh around the edges of the scene as shown.

That’s the end of the preview!

Step 1

In this step we will be creating the mud road for the BG.

1) Import the image of the mud road on to the canvas and place it as shown.

2)	To expand the width of the road, import the image of another mud road image and place it on the right side of previously created road. Use a layer mask to blend the images together smoothly.

3)	Duplicate the previously created layer and place it on the left side of the road as shown.

Step 2

In this step we will be creating a full moon sky.

1)	Create a new layer under the ground layer and fill in with Black color.

2)	Now import the image of the full moon sky on to the canvas and place it as shown.

Step 3

In this step we will be introducing the main character in the scene.

1)	Import the image of the model on to the canvas and place it as shown.

2)	Now create an Exposure adjustment layer and set the Exposure to +2.25.

3)	Using the Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer set the Brightness to 103 and Contrast level to 21.

4)	To blend the light shade on the model with the moon light paint a color gradient with the color #588892 on a new layer placed above the Model layer. Then set the Blending mode of the layer to Overlay.

5)	Now by using the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer set the Hue level to 189 and Saturation level to 25. Make sure to check the Colorize box before adjusting the Hue and Saturation levels.

Step 4

In this step we will be color correcting the Sky and the ground.

1)	Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the sky layer and check the Colorize box, then set the Hue to 189 and Saturation level to 25.

2)	Create Curves adjustment layer to the ground folder and set the Blue and Red curves as shown.

3)	Now create an Exposure adjustment layer to the ground folder and set the Exposure level to -0.63 and Gamma Correction to 0.56.

4)	Now de-saturate the ground layer by -51 using Hue/Saturation adjustment layer.

5)	Create another Exposure Adjustment layer to the ground folder and set the Exposure level to -0.51 and Gamma Correction to 0.74.

Step 1

1) Create a new canvas in Photoshop with dimensions, width=2610px and Height=4000px. Then import the image of the House onto the canvas and place it as shown.

2) Select the Lasso Tool (L) and cut the rooftop of the house as shown.

Step 2

Now by using the Stamp Tool (S) erase the people on the left side of the scene.

Step 3

Since we are creating a night scene, we are going to color correct the House using few Adjustment layers to fit with the environment we are creating.

1)	Create an Adjustment layer of Curves to the House layer and set the RGB curves as shown.

2)	Now create a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer and set the Saturation level to -52.

3)	Now by using the Exposure Adjustment layer darken the house by setting the Gamma Correction level to 0.46.

Step 4

Import the image of the night sky with full moon on to the working canvas and place it under the house layer.

Step 5

In this step we are going to digitally paint the supports of the broken roof.

1)	Using the Square brush paint the supports of the roof top as shown with black color.

2)	Now by using the color #bddcf1 paint the edges of the supports as shown.

3)	To match the ‘support’ with the house and make it look real, add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 0.9px.

4)	Since it is a broken roof we don’t expect the roof support to have sharp edges, hence by using the Lasso Tool (L) create broken edges to the supports as shown.

Step 6

In this step we are going to add gravel ground in the scene.

1)	Cut the image of the Gravel Ground from the original image and place it on the working canvas as shown. Then by using the Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer set the Saturation level to -94.

2)	Now create an Exposure Adjustment layer to the gravel ground and set the Exposure=-0.66, Offset=-0.0164 and Gamma Correction=0.43.

3)	By using the Curves Adjustment layer set the Blue Curve as shown.

Step 7

In this step we are going to add a tomb stone in the scene.

1)	Cut the image of the tomb stone from the original image and import it into the scene and place it as shown.

2)	Now create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the tombstone and set the Saturation level to -88.

3)	Now by using Exposure Adjustment layer set the Gamma Correction to 0.64.

4)	By using the Soft Round brush paint dark shadow on the tomb stone as shown.

Step 8

In this step we are going to add the main character in the scene.

1)	Cut the image of the evil magician from its original image using the Magic Wand Tool (W). Before cutting the image into a new layer, make sure you select a rough mask around the hair.

2)	Now select a rough mask around the character and open the Refine Edge option. Then set Smooth level to 1 and contrast to 2. By using the Refine Radius Tool grace around the borders of the hair line to detect the fine details of the hair. Then press OK to get the finely cut image in a new layer.

3)	Now import the character on to the canvas and place it as shown.

Step 9

In this step we are going to color correct the character to blend with the environment we are creating in the scene.

1)	Create an Exposure adjustment layer to the character layer and set the Exposure level to -0.38 and Gamma Correction to 0.61.

2)	Now paint shadow of the character on the ground as shown using a soft round brush.

Step 10

Usually we find the evil magicians having creepy hands in cartoons and in fantasy movies. So lets create the same creepy hands to our character too.

1)	Using the Pen Tool (P) select a mask around the hands and separate the selection into two separate layers. One for right hand and other for left.

2)	With the left hand layer selected go to Filter>Liquefy and shrink the arrow pointed areas using the Pucker Tool and then by using the Bloat Tool (B) bulge the knuckle and finger joints to get the creepy look to the hand.

3)	Now create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the hands folder and set the Saturation level to -56.

4)	By using the Exposure adjustment layer to the hand folder set the Gamma correction level to 0.89.

Step 11

In this step we are going to place a hat on the head of our evil magician.

1)	Import the image of the hat on to the canvas and place it on the head of the character.

2)	Now paint the dark shadows on the left side of the hat and also under the hat as shown.

3) Create an Exposure adjustment layer to the hat layer and set the Exposure level to -0.55.

Step 12

In this step we are going to create a dead tree and also add few dead branches in the scene.

1)	Create a new layer for the dead tree and place the layer under the ground layer and then by using the dead tree brush paint the tree on the canvas as shown behind the tomb stone.

2)	Import the image of the dead branches on to the canvas and place them on the left side of the scene as shown. Make sure to place this layer on the top of all the layers.

3)	Now create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the dead branches layer and set the Saturation level to -55.

4)	Using the Exposure adjustment layer set the Exposure level to -1.49 and Gamma Correction to 0.75.

5)	Since the dead branches are assumed to be closer to the scene they should be blurred in-order to maintain the Depth Of Field (DOF) of the scene.

Step 13

In this step we are going to create a magical smoke ball in-between the hands of the magician.

1)	Using a Soft Round brush paint a small white ball in-between the hands of the magician as shown in a new layer and set the Opacity of the layer to 49%.

2)	Now by using the smoke brush pain the smoke as shown in a new layer above the previously created white ball layer.

3)	Select another smoke brush and paint some fine detailed smoke around the smoke ball as shown.

4)	Now create a new layer and paint some smoke joining the hands and the smoke ball as shown, just to get the illusion that the smoke is coming from the hands of the magician.

Step 14

In this step we are going to create fog in the scene.

1)	Create a new layer under the ground layer and paint the fog as shown using the fog brushes.

2)	Now create a new layer above all the layers and paint the fog as shown and reduce the Opacity of the layer to 75%.

Step 15

In this step we are going to create a fence in the scene.

1)	Import the image of the fence on to the working canvas and place the fence layer beneath the fog layer. The by using the Puppet Warp option (Edit>Puppet Warp) and twist the fence zigzag as shown to make it look old and damaged.

2)	Now move the fence to the right side of the scene as shown.

3)	Create an Exposure adjustment layer to the fence layer and set the Gamma Correction level 0.47.

4)	Now add a Gaussian Blur of Radius 4.4px to the fence to maintain the DOF of the scene.

Step 16

In this step we are going to create a custom brush using other leaf brushes just to meet our requirements of the scene.

1)	Create a new canvas for the leaves and paint the leaves as shown using the leaf brushes.

2)	Now go to Edit>Define Brush Preset and give a name to the brush and save it.

Step 17

In this step we are going to work with the brush properties.

1)	With the Previously created brush selected go to brush properties and check the X & Y Flip Options check in the “Brush Tip Shape” and also set the Scaling level to 157% and Size to 5000px.

STEP 16

Then, we use the paint bucket tool to color the boxes in different shades of your theme color. IN our case it is green. Make sure you randomize the colors a bit, but keep the lighter hues on top, getting darker on the bottom. Once you are done with the color randomization, press CTRL+D to deselect the squares.

STEP 17

Then, change the blend mode of our layer to ‘Overlay’. Also reduce the opacity to 40%. This will blend our color blocks to our original gradient color layer. Once done, it is a good idea to save this document as you can use this for both front and back designs with just a few adjustments.

STEP 18

Now, create another new layer by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+N. Then, using the polygonal lasso tool, inscribe a graph shape across our design. Note that you should shape this polygon in a way that looks like a graph.

STEP 19

Then, use the gradient tool to add a gradient color to our polygon shape. Just set your theme colors as the foreground and background

STEP 20

Then, we change the blend mode of our graph layer to ‘Hard Light’.

STEP 21

We will now add an extra line effect to our design. Start with the pen tool. Select it from the tools panel, and click on several points creating a trail line along the lines of the graph layer. Make sure as well that you clicked on the ìcreate pathsî option for your pen tool in the options bar above.

STEP 22

Now, go for the brush tool. Right click on the canvass and then set a 5 pixel, 100% hardness round brush.
