Today’s tutorial will teach you how to photo manipulate an eerie sea cave, along with grim reaper boatman. You’ll learn various blending techniques, whereby you can blend multiple photos seamlessly. You’ll also learn how to create an effective depth of field as well as some cool looking light effects.
Let’s get started!
Create a new file with a width of 2000px and a height of 1200 px at 72 dpi (Dots per Inch). Background Contents should be White.
First off, let’s activate the Rectangular marquee tool and make two Strips and fill them with #000000 color.
Now, let’s open the Stormy Sky 3 in Photoshop. We will be using the sky from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas.
Click the Stormy Sky 3 and press V to activate the Move Tool. Left-click the image and drag the image to the main canvas and change layer name to “Sky”.
Next, activate the Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd +T), then while the “Sky” layer is selected and then resize it as shown below:
Now create a new Brightness/contrast adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (sky layer and Brightness/contrast) to make a mask.
When the Brightness/contrast box opens, input the following:
Now create a new Curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (sky layer and Curves) to make a mask.
When the Curves box opens, input the following:
The result should be similar to this:
Now, let’s open the ocean archway in Photoshop. We will be using the ocean from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas.
Click the ocean archway and press V to activate the Move Tool. Left-click the image and drag the image to the main canvas and change layer name to “ocean archway”.
Next, activate the Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd +T), then while the “ocean archway” layer is selected and then resize it as shown below:
Now add vector mask from the bottom of layers palette .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #000000
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this:
Now Create a new Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer from the bottom of the layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (ocean archway layer and Brightness/Contrast) to make a mask:
When the Brightness/Contrast box opens, input the following:
Now select the mask of Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer.
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #000000
Now paint over the highlighted area.
Now Create new Hue/saturation adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette .Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (ocean archway layer and Hue/saturation) to make a mask.
When the Hue/saturation box opens, input the following:
Now select mask layer of Hue/saturation .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #000000
Now paint over the highlighted area.
Now Create new Curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette .Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (ocean archway layer and Curves) to make a mask.
When the Curves box opens, input the following:
The result should be similar to this:
First off, let’s open the ‘Skull Island’ Stock in Photoshop. We will be using the Skull Island from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas.
Click the Skull Island Stock and press p to activate pen tool and then make a selection around the Skull and then click V to activate the Move Tool. Left-click the image and drag the image to the main canvas and change layer name to “Skull”.
The result should be similar to this:
Now add a vector mask from the bottom of layers palette .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #000000
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this:
Now activate a new layer and name it “Skull shadow” .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #000000
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this:
Now Create new Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette .Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Skull and Brightness/Contrast) to make a mask.
When the Brightness/Contrast box opens, input the following:
Now create a new color balance adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Skull and Color balance) to make a mask.
When the Color balance box opens, input the following:
Now create a new Curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Skull and Curves) to make a mask.
When the Curves box opens, input the following:
The result should be similar to this:
Now activate a new layer under the skull layer and name it “Dark”.
Make a random selection and fill it with black color.
The result should be similar to this:
Now open brush gallery and choose a brush:
Now activate a new layer above dark layer and name it “light 1″:
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 85%
Flow: 100%
Color: #542210
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this:
Again activate a new layer above light 1 layer and name it “light 2″:
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 100%
Flow: 100%
Color: #542210
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this:
Now, let’s open the stock ‘fire’ in Photoshop. We will be using the fire from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas.
Next, activate the Magic wand tool , then make a selection around the fire and drag it in our canvas and change it’s name to “tear1″:
Next, activate the Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd +T), then while the “tear1” layer is selected and then resize it as shown below:
Change it’s layer mode to “Vivid light” :
Now create a new Hue/saturation adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Tear1 and Hue/saturation) to make a mask.
When the Hue/saturation box opens, input the following:
The result should be similar to this:
Now make the second tear:
Now, let’s open the ‘Lava’ image in Photoshop. We will be using the Lava from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas.
Click the Lava and press V to activate the Move Tool. Left-click the image and drag the image to the main canvas and change layer name to “Lava 1″.
Next, activate the Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd +T), then while the “Lava 1” layer is selected and then resize it as shown below:
Now add vector mask from the bottom of layers palette .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #000000
Now paint over the highlighted area.
The result should be similar to this:
Now create a new Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Lava layer and Brightness/Contrast) to make a mask.
When the Brightness/Contrast box opens, input the following:
Now create a new Curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Lava layer and Curves) to make a mask.
When the Curves box opens, input the following:

Now add more lava layers.
Now, let’s open the ‘boat on land 01′ stock in Photoshop. We will be using the boat from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas.
Click boat on land 01 and press V to activate the Move Tool. Left-click the image and drag the image to the main canvas and change layer name to “boat”.
Next, activate the Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd +T), then while the “Boat” layer is selected and then resize it as shown below:
Now create a new Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Boat layer and Brightness/Contrast) to make a mask.
When the Brightness/Contrast box opens, input the following:
Create anew Curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Boat layer and Curves) to make a mask.
When the Curves box opens, input the following:

Now, let’s open the Rusted Lantern in Photoshop. We will be using the Rusted Lantern from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas.
Click the Rusted Lantern and press V to activate the Move Tool. Left-click the image and drag the image to the main canvas and change layer name to “Lamp”.
Next, activate the Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd +T), then while the “Lamp” layer is selected and then resize it as shown below:
Now create a new Hue/saturation adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Lamp layer and Hue/saturation) to make a mask.
When the Hue/saturation box opens, input the following:
Now create new Curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Lamp layer and Curves) to make a mask.
When the Curves box opens, input the following:
The result should be similar to this:
Now activate a new layer above lamp layer and name it “Light1″.
Now make a selection and fill it with “#da8c05″.
Now activate a new layer above lamp layer and name it “Light2″ .
Now make a selection and fill it with “#e2c003″.
Now activate a new layer above lamp layer and name it “Light3″ .
Now make a selection and fill it with “#ffffff” .
Now activate a new layer above lamp layer and name it “Light4″ .
Now make a selection and fill it with “#d5bb78″ and change it’s layer mode to “screen” and opacity to “23%” .

Now, let’s open the ‘Scythe 005′ stock in Photoshop. We will be using the Reaper from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas.
Click Scythe 005 and press V to activate the Move Tool. Left-click the image and drag the image to the main canvas and change layer name to “Reaper”.
Next, activate the Transform tool (Ctrl/Cmd +T), then while the “Reaper” layer is selected and then resize it as shown below:
Now create a new Brightness/contrast adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Reaper layer and Brightness/contrast) to make a mask.
When the Brightness/contrast box opens, input the following:
Now create a new Hue/saturation adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Reaper layer and Hue/saturation) to make a mask.
When the Hue/saturation box opens, input the following:
Create a new Curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (Reaper layer and Curves) to make a mask.
When the Curves box opens, input the following:

Now activate a new layer and name it “body shadow”.
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 100px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #000000
Now paint over the highlighted area.
Now activate a new layer and name it “body shadow”.
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 100px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 100%
Flow: 100%
Color: #6f4a0e
Mode: Screen
Layer opacity: 20%
The result should be similar to this:
Now,activate a new layer make a random selection and fill it with #000000 color and change it’s name to “cave”.
Now,let’s open the Texture in Photoshop. We will be using the Texture from this stock image so we will need to transfer it to our main canvas.
Click the Texture and press V to activate the Move Tool. Left-click the image and drag the image to the main canvas and change layer name to “Texture 1″.
Now create the layer mask.See as below.
The result should be similar to this:
Repet the same process create the whole cave .
Now create a new Hue/saturation adjustment layer from the bottom of the layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (cave and Hue/saturation) to make a mask.
When the Hue/saturation box opens, input the following:
Now select mask layer of Hue/saturation.
Activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :
Brush size: 400px
Hardness: 0%
Opacity: 40%
Flow: 100%
Color: #000000
Now paint over the highlighted area.
Create a new Curves adjustment layer from the bottom of layers palette. Press Alt+left click in between 2 layer’s (cave and Curves) to make a mask.
When the Curves box opens, input the following:
Now select mask layer of Curves .
Now activate Brush tool (B) with these settings :

Now paint over the highlighted area.
