30 Minute Redesign: Free PSP Themes Wallpapers

Week 24: Free PSP Themes Wallpapers

Free PSP Themes Wallpapers.

In the space of 5 minutes I can identify some of the key strengths and weaknesses of this design, and sketch out a mockup.

STRENGTHS:

  • Reasonably clear menu
  • Good use of imagery (wallpapers are fairly clearly displayed on the homepage)
  • Useful navigation methods such as tag cloud included

WEAKNESSES:

  • The site is FAR too busy. There are a lot of unnecessary elements, which obscure the key content (the wallpapers)
  • The amount of adverts is highly off-putting. The ads under the menu are trying to ‘trick’ people into clicking on a secondary navigation, but this just hinders the real navigation of the site.
  • The user must scroll quite a lot to see additional wallpapers. Only one wallpaper is above the fold.
  • The blog-type format seems unnecessary, as people aren’t there to read about the wallpapers, merely download them.

My Redesign

As always, I was limited by the 30 minute time-frame, but I tried to improve upon several of Free PSP Themes Wallpapers’ features, adding a few design flourishes and a clearer layout that promoted content over wasted space:

WHAT I TRIED TO DO:

  • Get rid of all unnecessary content and distracting adverts, making the wallpapers the focus of the site.
  • Make it much easier to browse and download wallpapers, offering clear call-to-action buttons. The bottom tag cloud also makes browsing easy.
  • I kept the color-scheme very muted, in order to promote the wallpapers rather than distract from them. This minimal approach ensures that visitors will focus only on browsing and downloading wallpapers, rather than being confused by an overly busy website. Your conversion rates should be far higher because of this.

Comparing the 2 Designs:

Here is a quick comparison between the original design and my 30 minute redesign. Sure, my design could be more polished, but I believe that a lot of the basic elements have been improved upon, creating a more pleasant browsing experience.

tom Why are you not Redesigning my website http://www.vision-ps.de/eng.html

i think you only Redesign your Premium Members Sites

  2. PSP Themes says:

Nice post. It gives me inspiration to redesign mine.

Javid: Thanks, I’m glad you liked the redesign :) . Every redesign gets selected by the weekly poll, and PSP Themes Wallpapers simply got more votes than your website. I wouldn’t take it badly, it simply means that people thought your website was better designed than this one. I don’t even think the owner is a premium member. Consider your site submitted for next weeks poll though!

    PSP Themes: Thanks! :)

  4. Excellent work, keep it up, where is next ? i am waiting for more.

Tom, this week, I’m not sure about your redesign. I´m talking about the ads. Some times, advertising is not only important, but the original reason for a site. Taking out is not an options most of the times. Good design, IMHO, is to include nicely into the design the needed elements.

The new design looks better, no doubt. But now, the owner can´t get anything from it.

nicely done tom, any chance to get me iPhone site redesign too??

  7. A simple redesign, sometime the site doesn’t need to be over the top and really sell itself. In this case the wallpapers really do need to do all the talking so the site is merely a platform for them. I think it is trying to get that balance sometimes that is the tricky part.

  8. Another week, another excellent redesign.

    Keep up the great work!

Nice Job Tom, simplicity is the key, sometimes eliminating the clustered parts of website, can make the site look and feel more user friendly.

Hi tom thanks for redesign my site, actually my site its not a site about wallpapers download its about themes, so i have to write some words to describe it because i made that psp themes myself, not copy paste from another psp site. you can see another example: http://www.dhsthemes.com/, the owner of this site also write some words about nokia themes that he created, he says about what icons or wallpaper he used to make those theme just like my site. anyway your redesign looks cool, thanks for your inspiration.

    Regards

Another excellent redesign. The original was far too messy, often simple is the key, as is the case with the site.

Can I put Thatcham Historical Society’s website ( www/thatchamhistoricalsociety.org.uk ) forward for consideration please? It is now outdated and we would like to redo the layout to amke it more modern, appealing but easy to use.

Again, well done on the redesigns so far.

  12. Another great redesign Tom. The design looks less cluttered and easier to look at. The simple layout helps the site look more user friendly and still be effective.

  13. Sweet redesign Tom!!! This has to be one of my favourite 30min redesigns you have done so far, such an improvement on the previous design!

    Great job!

  14. nice post keep up the good work
