30 Minute Redesign: Week 2 Vote

30 Minute Redesigns

Hope many of you saw the first week of our weekly 30 minute redesigns last Saturday. If you please check out the redesign I did of RichGates.com:

30 Minute Redesign: Rich Gates

The idea is that I redesign a website in just 30 minutes, trying to improve upon it’s design aspects. I then publish a case-study of my improvements for learning purposes and email the webmaster the final .psd design. I will be doing one redesign each week, and to be eligible for the following week’s redesign you must leave a comment to the previous week’s redesign with your web address and why you would like a redesign.

Voting Begins

After receiving lots of great comments to last week’s redesign post, I’m happy to present the candidates for this Saturday’s redesign. Please look over the websites below, and then use the poll at the bottom of this post to choose which site you’d like to see redesigned:

1: Web Area

2: Save Delete

3: Hot Yoga

4: DoKall

5: Citium Sistemas

6: The Capital Singers of Trenton

7: D&D Photography and Design

Vote Now!

Please cast your vote using the poll below:

Be sure to check back on Saturday for the winning case-study!

The Capital Singers of Trenton must be reDesigned! With no doubts :-) ))

  2. Vidit Kothari says:

I think – “The Capital Singers of Trenton” needs to be “designed” rather than “re-designed”.

I cant guess how little time the site’s owners gave it.

  3. Tom says:

Heh I had thought that :) . It looks like it’s winning the poll by a mile anyway, so unless things drastically change I’ll be redesigning their website this weekend.

  4. Florida Artist says:

I mean this with no disrespect, but don’t you think that this sets a bad example? I don’t feel this is a good thing to advertise. I also don’t think the job is done well. You said yourself numerous times in your previous post “if I had more time…”. The point is, why do something half-ass. That’s not what good design is about. I just don’t think this is a good weekly topic for designers, or the public for that matter. It doesn’t teach good practices. I understand the concept of what you are shooting for but maybe try it another way.

Other than that, you really do have a great blog.

  5. Tom says:

Florida Artist: No disrespect taken. You made your point politely and with no bad intent. I’m certainly not one for doing things half heartedly, as I’ve always believe that great design is in the details. You said that you understood the concept of what I’m going for. I do think that it’s important to help website owners overcome their fear of change, of improvement. I’m not saying that everyone should go and design their website in 30 minute – far from it. What I am saying is that every day website owners should look at these examples, and see how some basic design principles and very little time can make a big difference. I want people to walk away from these posts thinking ‘if that much improvement can happen in 30 minutes, then why don’t I try spending a couple of days improving my own site?’. If I had hours or days to spend on the redesigns then I would. As it is with my busy post and work schedule I feel that this post series is important enough to warrant the weekly slot, and that the message still holds a lot of worth even despite the small time-frame.

  6. @ The Capital Singers of Trenton. I agree with you.
I don’t see any thing designed in their website except the logo. Its just some text and links.

  7. Esteban Demarchi says:

Design/Re-Design NOW NOW !! The Capital Singers of Trenton

  8. Vim says:

I would say The Capital Singers of Trenton but you did a music based site last week, However I’m opting for Web Area purely because i want to see how well you can design for a web based company. Cheers Tom

  9. Tom says:

Looks like DoKall has taken the lead now!

  10. Manda says:

I think if somebody is going to get a free web redesign, it should be someone who is doing something good for the world. I don’t think that marketing companies or web design companies deserve a free redesign — if that is their business, they should be able to market themselves. I feel like it would be false advertising for their websites to be designed by you — it would mislead customers to believe they are more skilled than they are. I say redesign the Yoga site, or the Singers site. They need a professional designer to come in and help them — they aren’t pretending to be designers themselves.

  11. Manda says:

Seems fishy that DoKall has taken the lead when all of the comments show The Capital Singers as the leaders. Maybe DoKall is gathering their friends to vote? I say ignore the poll! Go with your gut and those who care enough to comment! Redesign for the Singers!!

    • Tom says:

It does seem strange how quickly they got all the votes Manda.. I don’t want to accuse anyone of anything, and PollDaddy do have measures in place to prevent such things. I’ll see how the poll ends up.

  12. Murugesh says:

doKall has a great business model. It’s advocating for consumer rights. Consumers will to be paid for their time and attention. Has a great socially responsible angle too! Non profits get a steady flow of funds. doKall helps conserve natural resources by using email instead of junk mail.

It’d be great to make it a fun and engaging site.

    Have fun!

  13. Tom says:

I will explain this in more detail in the 30 minute redesign post I’m doing later today but I will be redesigning the Capital Singers of Trenton, NOT doKall.

It appears that doKall somehow faked votes, and left spam comments on the blog (some of which I’ve deleted).

Consider voting time closed, and I hope you enjoy the redesign later today.

  14. Yes you are right, the argument in defence of Danny Boyle on the point remains, we are in complete agreement over that. I was just placing on the record my response to Rushdies rant, which you posted for the record on this thread. Cheers.
