30 Minute Redesign: Bocotas

Week 15: Bocotas

Bocotas.

In the space of 5 minutes I can identify some of the key strengths and weaknesses of this design, and sketch out a mockup.

STRENGTHS:

  • Bright, lively color-scheme suits the site’s theme well. It feels fun and fresh
  • Relatively clear menu
  • Legible text
  • Bold, fun logo

WEAKNESSES:

  • Although the site is bright and fun it’s a little overwhelming, as the number of graphics is too distracting
  • The left alignment of the layout feels a bit strange, I would go for a central alignment
  • The site lacks a clear welcome area
  • The layout feels a little too narrow, and thus squashed, it needs more padding

My Redesign

As always, I was limited by the 30 minute time-frame, but I tried to improve upon several of Bocotas’s features, adding a few design flourishes and a clearer layout that promoted content over wasted space:

WHAT I TRIED TO DO:

  • Created a bright and busy, yet elegant background design
  • Created a professional looking menu design.
  • Created a clear, professional welcome area
  • Made sure that the layout was centrally aligned, and wider with more padding

Comparing the 2 Designs:

Here is a quick comparison between the original design and my 30 minute redesign. Sure, my design could be more polished, but I believe that a lot of the basic elements have been improved upon, creating a more pleasant browsing experience.

I like it. Very clean and simple. Easier to follow than the original.

May I submit a site for your consideration? http://www.docbrown.com. Not the usual commercial site.

    Hi Tom,
That’s pretty amazing. I absolutely loves your redesign of the Bocotas website. Simply redesign but straight to the point. My questions is can you really do all that within 30 minutes?

Mine is http://www.48hourslogo.com . Any suggestions or comments is much appreciated.

Thank you Tom!. I like the redesign. This is a site I made for a friend of mine. Absolutly agree that the left align looks pretty odd.

I´d love to get the psd, in order to show the actual owner of the site.

Besides the design, another extra complication is that you are making some foreign lenguages sites, not so easy when its not your own.

  4. Whoops, sorry, I posted this on last week’s!

I love the new look, it’s quite impressive.

You may find it odd, but I’m submitting my site, http://www.ecustom.ca/ which is a web development site.

Why you may ask? Simple, I do web development, thus the coding and backend/frontend functionality, as opposed to web design, which this is.

  5. Awesome redesign Tom, you have managed to keep the same feel of the website whilst giving it a completely better look!!

    Great work.

  8. Another great 30 minute redesign Tom. The redesign looks so much better and you still kept the same theme as the old website. I really like how you’ve used the balloons and the paint splatters to make it stand out a lot more.
