30 Minute Redesign: Free IPhone Wallpapers

Late Post

Hey guys! Apologies for the delay with this week’s redesign. I was on vacation in New York and had a few travel delays getting back. I hope that you enjoy the post anyway!

Week 25: Free IPhone Wallpapers

Free IPhone Wallpapers.

In the space of 5 minutes I can identify some of the key strengths and weaknesses of this design, and sketch out a mockup.

  • Reasonably clear menu
  • Good use of imagery (wallpapers are fairly clearly displayed on the homepage)
  • Useful navigation methods such as tag cloud included

  • Small, hard to read logo should be more eye-catching
  • The adverts are fairly overwhelming, distracting from the main content
  • The site feels fairly boring. It’s not terrible, but nothing is particularly unique or eye catching.
  • The site feels more ‘Windows’ than ‘Apple’. The design of the site is not especially sleek or engaging, and so doesn’t fit with the IPhone product.

My Redesign

As always, I was limited by the 30 minute time-frame, but I tried to improve upon several of Free IPhone Wallpapers’ features, adding a few design flourishes and a clearer layout that promoted content over wasted space:

  • Make the site simpler and sleeker, fitting better with the IPhone product.
  • Make the site more interactive, through use of a jquery content slider. This makes it entertaining to browse the wallpaper categories.
  • Simplified the site’s content, making browsing simpler and clearer.
  • Made sure to include an IPhone product image, instantly making it clear what kind of wallpapers the site offers
  • Created a much larger, more obvious logo area. This makes it easier to brand the site.

Comparing the 2 Designs:

Here is a quick comparison between the original design and my 30 minute redesign. Sure, my design could be more polished, but I believe that a lot of the basic elements have been improved upon, creating a more pleasant browsing experience.

  1. I think that this is a really nice redesign. To display the wallpapers on the actual product makes perfect sense and allows the reader to see exactly what is will look like on their phone. The navigation is a lot easier and you have find you way around the site easily and quickly.

Glad to see that the site I voted was choosen :) I believed that among other sites nominated this one needs re-design the most. It appears that you really did made the site simpler and sleeker. Good Job! You made it look like an IPhone Wallpapers related site in just 30 minutes.

Thanks for the comments guys. I agree that this site probably needed the redesign the most, as the other sites had more strengths. My design would work a lot better once it had been coded, as it depends heavily on the cool content scroller area. I’m glad you liked the product placement though :) .

Another excellent redesign and to think it is done in only 30 mins. Nice and clear, easier navigation and much less clutter. Using the iPhone itself helps. Well done.

It would have been nice to see my site redesigned, guess I’ll put it forward again in the future.

  5. This is the best redesign I have seen you do so far. You have created a perfect marketplace for this site’s product.

  6. Tom says:

THS: Thanks a lot :) . I’ve been dying to redesign your site actually as it’s been in the running for weeks. It actually only missed out by 1 vote, although I agree that Free IPhone Wallpapers was probably more in need of a design than your website (I actually like your current design, but would just like to try and improve it).

Lori: Thankyou! It was a really fun design to mock up.

  7. THS says:

Tom, thanks. I do always love the redesigns you do. I always learn something, regardless of if it is a major overhaul or a simple adjustment. I know I have said before, I can code easily and is what I do for a living, but design, I would love your skills. 30minutes, would take me 30hours! Anyway, thanks for the feedback and keep up the good work.

  8. Tom says:

THS: Well looks like I have good news for you :) . As there were no suggestions this week, I’m going to be redesigning your website, as it only narrowly missed out on last weeks vote. Look out for the redesign Saturday!

  9. THS says:

Tom: That is excellent news, thank you. I am amazed more poeple do not put suggestions forward, what you do in 30 minutes and for free is just astounding. Can’t wait tot see the result.

  10. Rnel says:

@THS congratulations! We will all be excited to see the 30 minute Redesign episode tomorrow :)
