30 Minute Redesign #75: Check in Easy

Week 75: Check in Easy

This week I will be redesigning: Check in Easy.

In the space of 5 minutes I can identify some of the key strengths and weaknesses of this design, and sketch out a mockup.

STRENGTHS:

  • This is one of the best designed websites I’ve had to redesign. The design is generally clean and professional.
  • The colorscheme is limited, in a good way. This creates a strong visual brand and cohesion for the design.
  • The site uses relevant imagery, showcasing the app on relevant product shots.
  • The design integrates call to action buttons relatively well, using bright, colorful buttons to grab user attention.

WEAKNESSES:

  • The layout doesn’t use white space well at all, with things feeling a little busy/cluttered.
  • The call to action could do with being more eye catching. Right now equal attention is given to the sign in button and the primary call to action button.
  • The site makes a good attempt at explaining what the app does, but it could be clearer still.
  • There seems to be some content that would be better featured on subpages. It feels a little obsolete for the homepage.

My Redesign

As always, I was limited by the 30 minute time-frame, but I tried to improve upon several of Check in Easy’s features, adding a few design flourishes and a clearer layout that promoted content over wasted space:

MY AIMS FOR THE REDESIGN:

  • I reduced the amount of homepage content, making it simpler and even cleaner than the original.
  • I used a more eye catching, larger primary call to action button.
  • I used a more informative headline area, which helps better explain the app.
  • I integrated a tabbed menu area to make navigating the site easier.

Before/After:

Here is a quick comparison between the original design and my 30 minute redesign. Sure, my design could be more polished, but I believe that a lot of the basic elements have been improved upon, creating a more pleasant browsing experience.

How and Why To Enter 30 Minute Redesigns

You can have the chance to have your website redesigned in next weeks post. All you need to do is leave a comment to this post with your website address and why you think it needs a redesign.

The Benefits of Getting Your Site Redesigned Include:

  • Most obviously – a FREE redesign job!
  • Your website gets exposure to PSDFAN’s thousands of readers
  • You understand how to improve your website. This isn’t just a redesign, it’s a lesson in design principles.
  • You will get emailed the .psd of your redesign and can do whatever you want with it!

NOTE: I can only accept sites with English content, as foreign language websites are simply too hard for me to work with.

Mice redesign. My site is a bit clunky, but i’m in a quandry as to what to do.

Tom, Thanks so much for working on our site! We love what you did. Can’t wait to implement it.

    2 quick questions;
-Would you add the “Watch our demo video” button or text link next to learn more?

-Would you add a “Sign up now” button or text link next to learn more?

    • Tom says:

Thanks Justin, I’m so glad you liked my design and will think about implementing it! It’s standard practice for me to email across the .psd of the redesign to the owner, so I’ll go ahead and email you guys now. That way you can make any changes you need to the design.

This was a hard redesign to implement as the starting point was really good in the first place! I suppose that you look at the details more when the site is good to start off with and its just a case of fine tuning what is already there. I now do this with my websites, look at the strengths and honestly the weaknesses in my design and that helps to make sure that the details are all perfect. Taking a step back and looking at it as an outsider really works!

Thanks Steph :) . It definitely is easier to look at a design objectively when it’s not your own I think. Really glad you’ve been enjoying the 30 minute redesign series so much. We’re actually moving it to Blogs.FanExtra as of next week. It will still be the same great content though, with some notable improvements to the series.

    Great work!

I’m in the process of redesigning my site: http://lamsocialclub.com

    It’s a micro-social network for Latino Professionals.

I want to add a button that says: Join Now and I’m debating weather I should remove everything below the blue box for not logged in people…

Thanks and hopefully you can take a look at it!
